The KörberHaus in Hamburg-Bergedorf, Germany, offers space for encounters that are otherwise rare – far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This Third Place questions the future meet intergenerational exchange: young people discuss their perspectives on green sofas, while elderly guests spontaneously contribute their experiences.

The concept: to bring together people of different origins, ages and backgrounds in an open, trustworthy place. “Prejudices are best tested up close,” says Eva Nemela, member of the Executive Board of the Körber-Stiftung. Friction does not lead to conflict here, but to understanding and cohesion. But the challenge remains: How do you really reach everyone? The managers emphasize that the KörberHaus is more than just a place for educational or cultural activities. It is a symbol of a living community – a model that should radiate beyond Bergedorf. Marie Kressel, head of the library, describes it aptly: “The KörberHaus creates the basis for dialog and encounters, be it over a coffee, a choir evening or in the theater. It invites you to feel at home for a while. An island of togetherness in the midst of the elbow society.
